Planning Sharm El Sheikh Holidays? 10 Things to Know Before You Book

Planning Sharm El Sheikh Holidays? 10 Things to Know Before You Book

Diving in the Red Sea

There is a particular kind of holiday where checking the time becomes unnecessary, shoes are optional, and the biggest decision of the day is whether to head for the sea or order another drink by the pool. Sharm El Sheikh has perfected that feeling.

But this Egyptian coastal paradise has a few surprises up its sleeve. Beyond the glamorous resorts and postcard-worthy beaches, you’ll find coral gardens that rival tropical aquariums, desert mountains hiding centuries of history, and adventures that make an ordinary beach holiday feel anything but ordinary.

The tricky part? With so many resorts, beaches, excursions, and holiday packages competing for your attention, it’s surprisingly easy to book the wrong experience for your travel style.

That’s why planning Sharm El Sheikh holidays deserves a little insider knowledge. Before you choose your dates or fall for that irresistible all-inclusive deal, here are 12 things worth knowing to make every day of your Egyptian escape count.

1. Sharm El Sheikh Is More Than Just a Beach Destination

The first thing to understand about Sharm El Sheikh is that it offers several completely different holiday experiences in one destination.

Its coastline is famous for crystal-clear waters and colourful coral reefs, making it a paradise for snorkellers and divers. Yet just beyond the resorts, the dramatic Sinai Desert opens the door to entirely different adventures.

You can spend the morning swimming among tropical fish, explore desert landscapes in the afternoon, and enjoy a traditional Egyptian dinner in the evening.

Travellers can choose between:

  • Relaxing beach holidays at luxury Red Sea resorts.
  • Scuba diving and snorkelling adventures.
  • Desert safaris and Bedouin-inspired cultural experiences.
  • Romantic escapes with private boat excursions.
  • Family holidays featuring pools, water parks, and entertainment.
  • Sightseeing trips to historic and natural attractions.

This variety makes Sharm El Sheikh particularly appealing to groups with different interests. Nobody needs to sacrifice their ideal holiday to accommodate someone else’s preferences.

2. The Best Time to Visit Sharm El Sheikh Depends on Your Holiday Style

One of the greatest advantages of Sharm El Sheikh is its sunny desert climate, which makes holidays possible throughout the year.

However, the best travel dates depend on how you intend to spend your time.

Spring: March to May

Spring brings warm, generally pleasant weather, ideal for combining beach relaxation with outdoor excursions.

It is an excellent season for travellers who want to explore the desert without the intense heat of midsummer.

Summer: June to August

Summer is hot, with daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 35°C.

While the heat can make extended outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable, travellers who love swimming, air-conditioned resorts, and long poolside afternoons may still enjoy this season.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is one of the most appealing periods for Sharm El Sheikh holidays.

The sea remains warm after summer, while temperatures gradually become more comfortable for exploring the region.

Winter: December to February

Winter offers mild daytime conditions compared with many European destinations.

It is particularly attractive for travellers seeking winter sunshine, although evenings can feel cool and swimming conditions vary with wind and personal preference.

Travel tip: April, May, October, and November are particularly attractive months for travellers seeking a balance between beach activities and sightseeing.

3. Choosing the Right Area Can Completely Change Your Experience

Not every part of Sharm El Sheikh offers the same atmosphere.

Selecting the right neighbourhood is just as important as choosing the right hotel.

Naama Bay: For Entertainment and Convenience

Naama Bay is one of the resort city’s best-known tourist areas.

Its lively promenade, restaurants, shops, and nightlife make it ideal for first-time visitors who enjoy having entertainment within easy reach.

Sharks Bay: For Relaxation and Marine Life

Sharks Bay is popular for its upscale resorts and access to impressive snorkelling sites.

It appeals to couples, diving enthusiasts, and travellers seeking a quieter holiday atmosphere.

Nabq Bay: For Spacious Resorts and Family Holidays

Nabq Bay is home to numerous large resort complexes, including family-oriented properties with extensive facilities.

However, its exposed coastal location can experience stronger winds, and some beaches have shallow reef flats that require jetty access for swimming.

Hadaba: For Scenic Coastal Views

Hadaba, also known as Ras Um Sid, offers dramatic coastal scenery and access to several beautiful reef areas.

It is particularly appealing to travellers who prefer a more relaxed setting.

Our recommendation: Before booking, decide whether your priority is nightlife, direct beach access, snorkelling, or resort facilities. A beautiful hotel in the wrong location may not deliver the experience you imagined.

4. All-Inclusive Resorts Are Convenient, but They Are Not Always the Best Choice

When searching for Sharm El Sheikh holiday packages, you will encounter numerous all-inclusive offers.

These packages can provide excellent convenience, particularly for families and travellers who prefer predictable expenses.

Typically, an all-inclusive package may cover accommodation, buffet meals, selected beverages, and resort entertainment.

However, the exact inclusions differ significantly between properties.

Some resorts offer multiple speciality restaurants, while others require reservations or additional payments. Premium drinks, spa treatments, diving excursions, and airport transfers may also cost extra.

Before booking, examine:

  • Which restaurants and meals are included.
  • Whether speciality dining requires reservations or supplements.
  • Access to private beaches, pools, and water parks.
  • Children’s clubs and family entertainment.
  • Snorkelling equipment and water sports availability.
  • Airport transfers and cancellation conditions.

Travellers planning to spend most days exploring Sinai may find that a bed-and-breakfast or half-board package offers greater flexibility.

The best deal is not necessarily the cheapest package. It is the one that matches how you actually want to spend your holiday.

5. The Red Sea Offers Some of Egypt's Most Extraordinary Underwater Experiences

For many visitors, the real magic of Sharm El Sheikh begins beneath the water’s surface.

The Red Sea is celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity, colourful reef formations, and excellent diving opportunities.

Even travellers who have never worn a snorkelling mask can discover an entirely new world here.

Ras Mohammed National Park

Located near the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Ras Mohammed National Park is one of Egypt’s most famous marine protected areas.

Its coral reefs support an extraordinary variety of fish and other marine species.

Snorkelling and diving excursions often include selected sites around the park, depending on weather and sea conditions.

Tiran Island and the Straits of Tiran

The waters around Tiran Island are known for spectacular reef systems and renowned dive sites.

Boat trips frequently visit suitable snorkelling areas in the Straits of Tiran, offering opportunities to admire the Red Sea’s underwater landscapes.

Diving for Beginners

You do not need to be an experienced diver to enjoy the marine environment.

Licensed diving centres offer introductory experiences under professional supervision, while certified divers can explore more advanced sites.

Always choose a reputable operator, follow safety briefings, and avoid touching or standing on coral.

Insider tip: A reef-accessible hotel can make a major difference if snorkelling is one of your main reasons for visiting Sharm El Sheikh.

6. Desert Adventures Deserve a Place on Your Itinerary

It would be a mistake to visit Sharm El Sheikh and experience only its coastline.

Beyond the beach resorts lies the Sinai Desert, a landscape of rugged mountains, golden sand, and remarkable open spaces.

Desert excursions reveal a completely different side of Egypt.

Popular experiences include guided quad-bike rides, desert jeep safaris, camel rides, and evening excursions featuring traditional hospitality.

Some tours also include stargazing, giving visitors the opportunity to admire the night sky away from the city’s bright lights.

For a particularly memorable experience, consider a sunset desert excursion.

Watching the surrounding mountains change colour as daylight fades can become one of the defining memories of your holiday.

When selecting a tour, prioritise experienced guides, appropriate safety equipment, responsible animal welfare practices, and clear information about what is included.

Desert excursions should be booked through reputable operators familiar with local regulations and conditions.

7. Sharm El Sheikh Is an Excellent Base for Exploring Sinai

Although the beaches are tempting, several fascinating destinations can be explored beyond the resort city.

St. Catherine’s Monastery

Situated beneath the mountains of southern Sinai, St. Catherine’s Monastery is among the world’s oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries.

The UNESCO-listed area holds exceptional religious, cultural, and historical significance.

Visits require advance planning because opening arrangements and access restrictions may vary.

Mount Sinai

For adventurous travellers, a guided hike up Mount Sinai offers dramatic mountain scenery and an unforgettable sunrise experience.

The climb requires suitable footwear, physical preparation, and attention to weather conditions.

Dahab

Located north of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab offers a more laid-back coastal atmosphere.

Its waterfront cafés, diving sites, and relaxed character make it a popular excursion destination.

Coloured Canyon

Sinai’s striking sandstone formations provide another reason to explore beyond the coast.

Access to canyon areas depends on current conditions, permitted routes, and tour availability.

Travel tip: Not every excursion operates daily or follows the same itinerary. Confirm travel times, accessibility, and inclusions before making arrangements.

8. Entry Requirements and Travel Documents Need Attention Before Booking

Entry requirements are among the most important details to check when planning international travel.

Egypt’s visa rules vary according to nationality, travel purpose, and length of stay.

Some eligible visitors travelling directly to designated South Sinai resort areas may qualify for a free entry permission commonly known as the Sinai Only stamp, generally allowing a stay of up to 15 days within the permitted area.

However, this arrangement does not cover every nationality, itinerary, or excursion.

Travellers planning to visit other parts of Egypt, or stay longer than permitted under the Sinai-only arrangement, may need an appropriate Egyptian visa.

Before departure:

  • Check Egypt’s official entry requirements for your passport.
  • Confirm whether you need a visa before travelling.
  • Ensure your passport meets the applicable validity requirements.
  • Review travel insurance and medical coverage.
  • Check current government travel advice for your destination and planned excursions.

Visa policies and travel restrictions can change, so always verify requirements through official Egyptian authorities and your government’s travel guidance.

9. Sharm El Sheikh Is Family-Friendly, but Hotel Facilities Matter

Travelling with children requires a different approach to holiday planning. Fortunately, Sharm El Sheikh offers numerous family-oriented resorts designed to make holidays enjoyable for both adults and younger guests.

Many properties feature children’s swimming pools, water slides, supervised activities, and family entertainment.

However, not every beach is equally suitable for young swimmers.

Some coastal areas have coral formations close to shore, rocky seabeds, or deep-water access via pontoons.

Families with small children should prioritise hotels with sandy swimming areas, suitable shallow pools, lifeguard arrangements, and shaded outdoor spaces.

For younger travellers, sun protection is particularly important in Egypt’s strong sunshine.

A family-friendly itinerary might combine relaxing resort days with a short glass-bottom boat excursion, a gentle snorkelling trip where appropriate, or an evening exploring local markets.

The secret to a successful family holiday is balance: enough adventure to create excitement, with plenty of time to rest.

10. Local Culture, Food, and Practical Etiquette Add to the Experience

Although Sharm El Sheikh is an international resort destination, it remains distinctly Egyptian.

Exploring beyond your hotel introduces you to local flavours, welcoming hospitality, and a different rhythm of daily life.

Discover Egyptian Cuisine

Try traditional dishes such as grilled kofta, freshly baked baladi bread, tahini, and koshari.

Seafood restaurants are also popular along the Red Sea coast.

Explore the Old Market

Sharm El Sheikh’s Old Market is a lively place to browse souvenirs, spices, traditional products, and local shops.

It is also home to the striking Al Sahaba Mosque, one of the area’s most recognisable landmarks.

Understand Local Customs

Egyptian culture places importance on hospitality and respectful behaviour.

Modest clothing is recommended when visiting religious sites or more traditional areas, even though swimwear is common at resort beaches.

Tipping, often called baksheesh, is customary for many services, although it is generally discretionary.

The Egyptian pound is the local currency. Cards are accepted at many hotels and established businesses, but carrying some local cash is useful for smaller purchases and tips.

Learning simple Arabic expressions such as shukran (thank you) can make everyday interactions even more enjoyable.

Final Thoughts: Make Your Sharm El Sheikh Holiday Unforgettable

Some destinations are memorable because of one extraordinary attraction. Sharm El Sheikh is different because of the variety of experiences it brings together.

The Red Sea invites you to explore an underwater world bursting with colour. The Sinai Desert offers breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable sunsets. Beautiful resorts provide the perfect setting to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the sunshine.

Whether this is your first visit to Egypt or your next adventure along the Red Sea, Sharm El Sheikh holidays can be tailored to almost every travel style.

The key is choosing the right season, location, accommodation, and experiences before you book.

An Unforgettable 6-Day Adventure Through Egypt I would like to say a big thank you to Ahmed and Mohamed for organizing my amazing 6-day trip through the Black and White Deserts and Siwa. Everything was extremely well organized, and no time was wasted during the transfers. The whole trip ran smoothly from beginning to end, which allowed me to make the most of every day. Thanks to them, I was able to introduce Egypt to two friends who had never really experienced the country before, and it was an incredible experience for all of us. What I especially appreciated was their flexibility and the fact that we could always find common ground. They were always willing to listen to my wishes and adapt the trip accordingly, which is truly remarkable. Thank you again to Ahmed and Mohamed for making this journey so memorable. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to discover Egypt in an organized, flexible, and authentic way!

Amazing experience We had a wonderful experience with the White Desert tour. We started our safari with a delicious lunch at our tour guide's home. After that, we headed into the desert. I never knew the desert was so diverse. In the middle of the White Desert, camp was set up and a delicious meal was prepared. The peace and quiet was also wonderful after a few busy days in Cairo. The gentlemen were very friendly and hospitable. It was an unforgettable experience. So glad we were able to do this safari!

A Surreal and Exceptional Experience We had an amazing experience on the White Desert tour. Mr. Ahmed drove us safely from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, and the lunch in Bahariya was excellent. From there, Mr. Munir and Mr. Hisham took us into the desert in a 4x4 vehicle. They were professional and friendly, and made the entire journey unforgettable. We visited many incredible places, including the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, and the White Desert, each offering breathtaking scenery. Camping in the White Desert was a truly surreal experience. The night sky was absolutely stunning, and we could clearly see the Milky Way and countless stars. The dinner at the campsite was also delicious and exceeded our expectations. Thank you to the entire team for such a memorable adventure. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Egypt and looking for a unique desert experience.
